Is Artificial Intelligence Possible?
This evening's event will count on with Thomas Bolander, Professor at the informatics department of DTU. According to the father of AI, John McCarthy, "Artificial intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs." Thomas Bolander will digress on the possibility of making machines and computer programs that are intelligent. But this issue is complicated unless you know exactly what is meant by the word "intelligent". When can a computer or a robot be said to be intelligent? This turns out to be an immensely difficult question to answer, partly because the boundaries of what we consider as intelligent behaviour are continuously shifting.
In this session, Thomas Bolander will outline the history of AI, including the varying conceptions of what AI is or should be. He will give examples of some of the biggest achievements and breakthroughs within the area through time. Finally, he will discuss what can be expected from AI in the future, and whether there is a limit to what can be achieved, that is, whether there is a limit to what kinds or degrees of artificial intelligence are possible.
After a Q&A at the bar together with cocktail making performances by Lars E. Lyndgaard Schmidt and his team, Halla Guðmundsdóttir, singer-song writer, will do a solo performance that will light up your hearts.
